This is the question we get more than any other, and it almost always arrives the same way: “I have the degree and no experience, and every entry-level posting wants a year of experience.”
Here is the thing that is genuinely hard to hear: the order was the problem, not you. The credential was supposed to open the door, and it does not work that way in this field. Get the entry role before the degree, not after.
The four doors that open without prior experience
- Patient access and scheduling. Front desk, registration, referral coordination. The fastest way to learn the vocabulary because you hear it all day.
- Revenue cycle. Billing, claims, denials, prior authorisation. This team hires more steadily than almost any other and the terminology transfers straight into analyst and manager roles.
- Compliance and quality. Genuinely under-applied-for. Most candidates do not think of it, so the competition is thinner than it looks.
- An administrative fellowship. Structured, paid, designed for people without experience — and the most direct route if you are finishing a master's.
Why the degree alone does not move you
A hiring manager cannot see what you have done if all you have is a transcript. The degree is real, but it is a signal about your capacity to learn, not evidence that you can run a floor. Somebody with eight months of patient access and no master's will usually beat somebody with a master's and no operational exposure — because one of them has seen a problem on a Tuesday and the other has only read about it.
What this looks like in practice
Take the entry job, even if it is not the title you want. Two years of it while you study is worth more than the same two years of studying alone. You will enter the graduate programme able to say “at my last role, our no-show rate was 19% and we took it to 11%” — and that sentence is the reason you get interviews afterwards.
If you want the graded version of this, the scorecard will tell you which of the four dimensions is actually holding you back.
